Course Description
Less Lethal (LL), or intermediate force options like the 40mm are becoming increasingly preferred by governing bodies, inquest juries, and the public because of their effectiveness in de-escalating potentially deadly situations. This 1-day instructor level course will impart instructor-level knowledge of the 40mm platform and munitions, as well provide tips and guidance for implementation of the 40mm platform into your department.

A Military Veteran and Law Enforcement professional spanning nearly four decades of service. His career experience includes front-line officer, tactical operator, team leader, and senior training officer for the Toronto Police Service Emergency Task Force. Chris has expertise in Less Lethal, De-Escalation and Use of Force including Master Instructor and Less Lethal Instructor certifications through Defense Technology.
COURSE PREREQUISITES
Each attendee must be physically fit for duty and be able to perform the practical and tactical applications of these products. This training is only open to active Law Enforcement, Corrections, Armed Government Agency, and relevant military personnel.
Course Overview
This course is divided into two parts: a classroom portion and a range portion
- In the classroom:
- This is an interactive participation-based discussion, not a user or instructor certification, it is designed to assist with the development and implementation of a LLIM program to your agency, or assist in further evolution of an existing program
- Development of policies, procedures, and SOP’s
- De-escalation and control tactics
- Scene management, prior, during, and after application of munitions
- Training and qualification development
- History and modern use of the 40mm/12GA platform
- Baseline capabilities needed to plan and implement 40mm platform
- Common barriers to successful implementation and tips to overcome them
- Launcher overview and functionality
- Munitions overview and nomenclature
- Recommended guidelines for use and deployment of the 40mm/12GA impact launcher
- On the range:
- Safe operation of the 40mm/12GA platform
- Hands on experience with less lethal launchers
- Nomenclature and munitions overview
- Deployment procedures (target areas, effective distances, understanding typical engagement distances and evaluation principles such as flight times and subject/suspect behaviours)
- Subject apprehension tactics (coordination of efforts)
Upon completion the student will have detailed understanding of 40mm/12GA equipment, munitions, deployment procedures and implementation strategies.
